Regions

Mozambique's 11 provinces differ widely in income, prices and access to services. Province figures come from INE and the census; market prices are for individual towns and are labelled as such.

Regional Intelligence

What is this?

A map of Mozambique's 11 provinces (Maputo Cidade and Maputo Província shown separately) with the province-level figures Stats could verify.

Each value is labelled Observed (published by a statistics office for that province), Calculated (simple arithmetic on observed values) or No data. Nothing is modelled or estimated.

How to read it

  • Colour shows the metric chosen above the map; darker means higher. It ranks provinces, it does not say how large the gaps are, so read the numbers in the panel.
  • Compare two provinces with Compare. Only rows where both have data are comparable; a missing row is a real gap, not a zero.
  • Population is from 2017 and spending from a survey in 2019/20. Neither is current; treat them as structure, not a live reading.

What does the data say?

Spending per person is highest in Maputo Cidade and Maputo Província, and lowest in Gaza, Nampula and Zambézia in the 2019/20 survey. Population is concentrated in Nampula and Zambézia.

The INE report's own text and its Quadro 4.2 disagree for Gaza and Zambézia; the table is used.

Inflation is published only for the cities of Maputo, Beira and Nampula, so no province shows a CPI value.

Why does it matter?

  • Population and spending suggest where the larger addressable markets might be and where customers may have less to transact with. Neither measures mobile money use.
  • Provincial mobile money activity, agent density, network coverage and poverty are not in this section because no verifiable province-level source was found. Add your own operator data to fill those gaps.
  • These links are plausible, not proven; they need checking against internal data.

What should I watch?

  • Urban share by province from the census tables
  • Provincial poverty rates (World Bank Poverty Assessment 2023)
  • FinScope or operator data for mobile money usage by province
  • INCM network coverage by province

Saved figure
Latest observation
Census 2017; survey 2019/20
Last updated

Frequency
Census every ten years; household budget survey every five or six years
Method
Values copied from the published tables with source, year and geography recorded in data/regional/*.json. Calculated rows are labelled.
Limitations
Population figures come from a secondary republication of INE and should be checked against the INE brochure. Survey spending is not adjusted for regional price differences. Province map outlines are schematic (Natural Earth).

Prices by market

In Mar 2024, rice (imported) cost most in Lichinga (70.00 MZN per kg) and least in Maputo (50.00), across 8 markets reporting that month.

  • Lichinga Niassa70.00
  • Panda Inhambane67.00
  • Massinga Inhambane65.00
  • Mocuba Zambezia60.00
  • Montepuez Cabo Delgado60.00
  • Nampula Nampula58.00
  • Mandimba Niassa50.00

44 other markets last reported in an earlier month and are not ranked: Alto Molócuè (Jul 2019), Angónia (Sept 2023), Balama (May 2021), Beira (May 2020), Bela Vista (Jun 2020), Boane (Aug 2020), Buzi (Jun 2020), Báruè (Dec 2021), Caia (Oct 2022), Changara (Oct 2022), Chibuto (Jul 2023), Chicualacuala Mapai (Jun 2020)….

Each bar is one market town. A town's price is not a province average.
