Energy

Fuel prices in Mozambique are set by the energy regulator, ARENE, and change only when it announces an adjustment. World oil prices move every day. This page puts the two side by side.

Regulated fuel prices

Latest adjustment, in force since 2026-05-07: petrol 83.57 → 93.69 MZN/L (12.1%), diesel 79.88 → 116.25 MZN/L (45.5%).

Petrol (gasoline) — regulated retail price

What is this?

The maximum retail price of petrol (gasoline) set by the energy regulator.

How to read it

  • Prices stay flat between adjustments, so a flat line means no decision, not stable world prices.
  • Unit: MZN/L.

What does the data say?

Petrol (gasoline) — regulated retail price is 93.69 MZN/L (Oct 2026), 305.6% higher than in Jan 2010. Over the last year: +12.1%.

Over all 198 observations since Jan 2010, the highest was 93.69 (May 2026) and the lowest 23.10 (Jan 2010).

Why does it matter?

  • Households: Chapa (minibus) fares and food transport costs follow fuel prices.
  • Businesses: Transport, logistics and generator costs.
  • Government: Adjustments balance importer costs, subsidies and social pressure.
  • Investors: Inflation risk.
  • Mobile money: Higher transport costs can squeeze household budgets and raise the nominal value of everyday payments; effects on transactions are not measured here.

Method
Transcribed by hand from the published PDF table (image). Each value is the regulated retail price in force during that month. Exact adjustment days before 2026 are not published in this table. Adjustments announced on the ARENE homepage are added with their effective date; the month of the most recent retrieval records the price ARENE shows as in force that day.
Limitations
Maximum regulated retail price; actual prices can differ at some stations and in remote areas. Adjustment days before 2026 are known only to the month.

World oil vs Mozambican pump prices

What is this?

The world market price of crude oil (brent) (US$/bbl).

Mozambique imports all its refined fuel, so world oil prices feed into the regulated petrol and diesel prices set by ARENE, with a lag and not one-for-one.

How to read it

  • All three lines start at 100 in January 2010, so the chart compares percentage movement, not price levels.
  • Brent is in US dollars per barrel of crude; pump prices are regulated maximums in meticais per litre of refined fuel. A weaker metical raises local prices even when Brent is flat.

What does the data say?

Crude oil (Brent) is 116.8 US$/bbl (Sept 2026), 7200.0% higher than in Jan 1960. Over the last year: +71.8%.

Over all 801 observations since Jan 1960, the highest was 133.9 (Jul 2008) and the lowest 1.2 (Jan 1970).

Why does it matter?

  • Households: Affects local prices only where Mozambique imports the product.
  • Businesses: Exporters earn more when world prices rise; importers pay more.
  • Government: Royalties and export taxes move with world prices.
  • Investors: Commodity exposure of Mozambique's exports.
  • Mobile money: Indirect; mainly through incomes in producing regions.

Brent crude (world, US$) is 152.9 index, start = 100 (Sept 2026), 52.9% higher than in Jan 2010. Over the last year: +71.8%.

Indexed so each line starts at 100. Brent is a monthly world average in US dollars; pump prices are regulated maximums in meticais. Changes in world oil reach Mozambican pumps late and not one-for-one: ARENE adjusts prices occasionally, the exchange rate and taxes also matter, and importers buy refined products, not crude.
