Compare

Mozambique against its neighbours, Portugal, large emerging economies, Sub-Saharan Africa and the world. All series come from the World Bank, which harmonises definitions across countries; values are in US dollars or ratios, so no currency conversion is applied here.

How to read it

  • Unit: %. Modes: Values shows levels; % change shows year-to-year movement; Indexed sets each country to 100 in the first common year.

Why does it matter?

  • Households: Job loss cuts income.
  • Businesses: Labour availability.
  • Government: Social pressure.
  • Investors: Demand risk.
  • Mobile money: Employment conditions may affect salary inflows and P2P transfers. Potential, not proven: check against internal transaction data before acting on it.

Limits: dollar values move with exchange rates as well as real activity. Purchasing-power (PPP) comparisons use the World Bank's own PPP series only and are not applied to commodity prices or exchange rates. Retail prices are not compared across countries here: products, package sizes, taxes and market coverage differ too much for a fair like-for-like comparison from the available data. Exchange rates are each country's own currency per US dollar and are not comparable as levels, so they are left out.
